Structural Engineering and Solid Mechanics

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs

The Structural Engineering and Solid Mechanics program is focused on behavior, characterization and design of structural components and systems involving multiple length scales for infrastructure and other applications, including design of advanced materials. To achieve these ends, the program applies the fundamental principles of structural and solid mechanics and the properties and uses of engineering materials in design. Courses of study emphasizing structural design or structural and solid mechanics are available. Research activities include static and dynamic field testing, health monitoring and identification of structures, analytical and computational mechanics of structures and materials, linear and nonlinear mechanics of advanced materials, including heterogeneous and functionally graded materials, rubber-like and biological materials, and structural reliability.
