PSYC 401 - Intergroup Relations

Students develop an understanding of the basic cognitive and motivational processes involved in intergroup relations, and are encouraged to consider the role of stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination in everyday life. While pursuing these broad goals, students learn about the following topics: variations in racist and sexist beliefs; prejudice against people in a number of different social groups (e.g., ethnic groups, sexual orientation, gender, size); the effect of stereotypes on how we perceive others and interact socially; how targets of prejudice perceive prejudice, are affected by prejudice, and cope with prejudice; and the psychological processes that may change stereotypes and reduce prejudice.
