HIUS 353 - The U.S. Legal Profession Since 1865

The variety of roles played by American lawyers over the past century and a half is the subject of this course. Attention is paid to the role of lawyers in business, politics, and government, as well as to the institutional development of the legal profession, the changing character of legal education, and the diversification of the ethnic, racial, and gender composition of the bar. Popular attitudes toward the legal profession are also examined. The course is taught by lectures supplemented by a wide variety of readings in primary and secondary sources and the viewing of several films. (SS)
