ANTH 243 - Languages of the World This course introduces students to what languages are, how they are related to one another, where and by whom they are spoken, and what is happening to them in this period of rapid globalization. Using the framework of linguistic science, we survey the world’s languages region by region, so that students can come to appreciate both what makes human language a unified phenomenon and the dimensions along which languages may differ. By the end of the course students are able to appreciate why the death of languages that is now taking place on a massive scale represents such a great loss to humanity. (IR)
