Steps to Declare the Minor

Review the web listing of WGS courses .
Obtain a current copy of your Academic Advising Transcript from the Student Information System (SIS).
Obtain a copy of the Declaration of Minor at https://college.as.virginia.edu/forms.
Complete the Minor Advising Worksheet.
Review your completed forms with WGS Director of Undergraduate Programs, Bonnie Hagerman, during office hours or email to make an appointment.

Program Requirements

As of August 27, 2024 any student wishing to declare a WGS Minor must have completed one unspecified WGS course with a grade of C of better.

A minimum grade of C must be earned in all courses to count towards the minor.

Requirements

The minor in Women, Gender & Sexuality (WGS) requires the completion of 6 courses (18 credits). One of these courses must have a non-Western emphasis (see below for a list of courses that fulfill this emphasis). The six courses must also include the following:

One WGS course at the 3000-level or above
One WGS course at the 4000-level (for which they must qualify by taking the second writing requirement, or the research and methods class)
Two electives that are WGS courses, which may be at any level

WGS 3125 - Transnational Feminism Credits: 3

The following courses count as fulfilling the non-Western emphasis of the minor:

WGS 3150 - Race & Power in Gender & Sexuality Credits: 3
WGS 3220 - Global Perspectives on Gender & Sport Credits: 3
WGS 3230 - Gender and the Olympic Games Credits: 3
WGS 3900 - Gender & Sexuality in Islamic Culture Credits: 3
WGS 4500 - Topics in Women, Gender & Sexuality Credits: 3
WGS 4730 - Global Perspectives on Men and Masculinities Credits: 3
