Data Science - Minor

Requirements for Minor in Data Science

Complete a minimum of 15 graded credits. A minimum of 4 courses/12 credits must be data science courses (DS XXXX) and include:

3 credit Foundational Programming course
3 credit Analytics course
3 credit Systems course
3 credit Data Design or Value course
DS 4002 or domain elective

DS 1001 Foundation of Data Science can be counted as one of the 4 required DS courses.

Foundational Programming Course (select one course)

DS 1002 - Programming for Data Science Credits: 3
CS 1110 - Introduction to Programming Credits: 3
CS 1111 - Introduction to Programming Credits: 3
CS 1112 - Introduction to Programming Credits: 3
CS 1113 - Introduction to Programming Credits: 3
PHYS 1655 - Introduction to Python for Scientists and Engineers Credits: 3
Test credit for AP Computer Science A with a score of 4 or 5 or IB HL Computer Science with a score of 5, 6, or 7 is acceptable.

The Foundational Programming requirement may not be substituted with another course taken at a higher level or the CS 1110 place-out test. Students who are ineligible to enroll in a Foundational Programming course due to previous experience may take an additional course in another area to total 15 credits for the minor. Students should enroll in an approved minor course and email SDSMinor@virginia.edu to ensure the requirement is satisfied in SIS.

Completion

Completion of the Data Science minor requires a minimum of 15 credits. Data science courses count toward the graduation hours in any school of enrollment. Students should consult with their School of Enrollment for policies on double-counting credits.
