Historic Preservation Minor

Theory (3 credits): Required

• ARH 3608 - Historic Preservation Theory and Practice Credits: 3

History (6 credits)

Two School of Architecture (SARC) history classes of student’s choice at the 3000 level or above.  Other environmental history classes outside the college can apply with director’s approval. Sample SARC classes include but are not limited to:

• ARH 2700 - Thomas Jefferson and American Architecture Credits: 3
• ARH 2753 - Arts & Cultures of the Slave South Credits: 4
• ARH 3003 - Evidence and Archives in Architectural History: Vernacular Architecture Credits: 3
• ARH 3609 - Community History Workshop Credits: 3
• ARH 3616 - History of American Building Technology Credits: 3
• ARH 3620 - Cultural Landscape of Virginia Credits: 3
• ARH 3701 - Early American Architecture Credits: 3

Field Methods (3 credits)

One class that includes documentation and recording techniques used in preservation and archaeology.  ARH 3604 is the standard field methods course, however other courses from throughout the university may apply with director’s approval. (Students with previous experience in this topic may place out of the field methods requirement with the director’s permission and instead add an additional Specialized Component or History course to meet the required 15 credits).

Specialized Component (3 credits)

One class in a specialized component of preservation practice. Example classes include design, technology, materials science, planning, law, curation, or others with director’s approval.  Sample School of Architecture classes included but are not limited to the following:

• ARH 3614 - Theory & Practice in Rural Preservation Credits: 3
• ARH 3618 - Materials and Culture Credits: 3
• LAR 5230 - Cultural Landscape Preservation
• PLAN 5300 - Preservation Planning

Internship

An internship is not required for the minor.  However, internships are encouraged and many students undertake them. Opportunities for internships and guidance in planning for them can be discussed with the program director and the Architecture School’s Internship Office.
