RELG 287 - Religion and Violence

This course is primarily concerned with the contemporary discussion about violence, terrorism, and holy war.  It addresses the questions:  Why do people turn violent?  Why do they turn to terrorism?  Do we have adequate categories for making sense of perpetrators’ motivations?  This course examines the case of Muslim extremism and how organized violence is dealt with in Christianity and Judaism.  The course will draw upon history, political science, philosophy, and religious studies to appreciate the complexities of this pressing subject.
