PHIL 164 - Love in Philosophy

This course will study the history of the concept(s) of love in philosophy.  Starting with ancient treatments of love, and includiing some of the modern and medieval literature, the course will serve as an introduction to the central role love has played in Western philosophical thought.  Throughout the course we will examine both the nature of love (union, bestowal of value, emotion) and its different forms (erotic or romantic, in friendship, self-love, of God, of neighbor).  We will address questions such as: Does love conflict with or ground morality? Are various passions distortions of love?  Can one be commanded to love?  The course aims to provide an opportunity to consider the complex nature of love, and its central place in our thought and experience.
