Doctor of Philosophy
Of the 72 credits required for the degree, students are expected to complete a minimum of 51 credits of graded coursework, including 36 credits of coursework in Greek and Latin taken in the Department and Classics 9995 (Dissertation Seminar). Students are expected to pass a preliminary translation exam in either Greek or Latin; translation exams in German and either French or Italian; written examinations on Greek and Roman history (or audit equivalent courses approved by the Director of Graduate Studies while achieving a minimum average grade of B on the midterm and final); general examinations involving translation of Greek and Latin and commentary on an author; an oral examination on Greek and Latin literature; and obtain approval of a dissertation prospectus. Students are expected to submit a paper of publishable quality to their committee for review by the start of the fifth term. Students are expected to complete all requirements stated above by the conclusion of their seventh term of study. Students are expected to write and defend a dissertation. Total Required Credits: 72
