Return to: School of Education and Human Development: Certificate Programs

The Graduate Certificate in Reading Education program is a fully online program designed to develop knowledge about science-based reading, instruction, and effective and efficient reading assessment and instruction at both the elementary and secondary levels. Graduates are eligible for Virginia’s add-on reading specialist endorsement.

Program Requirements

Practicum Requirement (3 credits)

The practicum provides an experiential academic component to enhance the student’s knowledge and skillset in reading education. Students will work with school-age children. The practicum will entail supervised, practical application of knowledge and skills gained in coursework. Students will be required to fulfill a minimum of 36 clock hours. Students will be evaluated by a supervising faculty member in consultation with on-site administrators as applicable. Assessment of student performance will be based on participation in course assignments, reviews of lesson planning, structured observations of lesson implementation, and confirmation of contact hours. If a student fails the practicum, the course may be repeated a second time to fulfill the practicum requirement.

Graduates of the Master’s of Education in Reading Education are eligible for Virginia’s add-on reading specialist endorsement.
