Engineering Research - Minor

The Engineering Research Minor is available to all undergraduate students in SEAS. The minor requires a minimum of 18 credits from two categories: “research for credit” courses and “supporting” courses. All courses are to be taken in addition to the student’s major requirements.

Research for Credit

At least 9 credits of “research for credit” courses under any applicable name that aligns with the below mnemonics, exclusive of required capstone courses, and include:

Some courses, including ENGR 2995, can be taken repeatedly and/or for variable credit.

Supporting Courses

At least 6 credits of courses designed to support students’ research efforts by using their research topic and data as a basis for active pedagogy.

An experimental design course. Any of the following options are acceptable.

Rules and Requirements

Successful completion of the minor is dependent on submission in good-faith of a written technical report summarizing their research work. A manuscript prepared for publication is ideal. This report is to be submitted both to the minor advisor and to the Dean’s office. The report is not graded but is a hard requirement for completion of the minor. Submission of the manuscript and completion of the minor will be regulated through a milestone in SIS.  If the report is not submitted or if the student is found to have not met the rules and requirements of the minor (see below), the minor will be removed as a program of study.

  1. The minor advisor will be the principal investigator of the student’s laboratory.
  2. Students must complete at least 3 credits of research-for-credit prior to declaring the minor. Declaring the minor requires the approval of their presumptive minor advisor and a dean’s designee.
  3. At least 3 semesters (9 credits) of research must come from work in a single lab or research group to enforce the continuity of engagement that lends value to this minor.
  4. Students may apply only 3 credits of research per fall or spring term toward the research minor. During summer session, students may apply up to 6 credits of research toward the minor.

Total Required Credits: 18
