Data Science, B.S.


General Education Requirements (33 credits)

The School of Data Science will accept students from any of the College of Arts & Sciences general education curricular programs (Echols Scholars Program, Engagements Pathway, Disciplines Plus Pathway or Forums curriculum) and any other school of enrollment at UVA. Search course attributes in SIS for a list of courses that count toward general education requirements.

The School of Data Science waives all general education curricular requirements for Echols Scholars.

The courses from the B.S. Data Science core that satisfy general education requirements are noted below. 

 

  • Rhetoric for the 21st Century: 6 credits required

    First Writing Requirement 3 credits required

    Students transferring from the School of Engineering and Applied Science can meet the First Writing Requirement one of two ways:

    1. Students who have taken (and passed with a C- or better) both ENGR 1010 and ENGR 1020 can use those courses to satisfy the First Writing Requirement.
    2. Students who have taken (and passed with a C- or better) only one course in the two-course sequence of ENGR 1010-ENGR 1020 must enroll in either ENWR 1510, ENWR 1520, or ENWR 1530 to fulfill First Writing Requirement.

  • Satisfies Second Writing Requirement (3 credits)

  • Quantification, Computation, and Data Analysis: 6 credits required

  • Credits: 3
  • Satisfies 3 credits of the Quantification, Computation, and Data Analysis Requirement.

  • Artistic, Interpretive, and Philosophical Inquiry: 3 credits required

  • Chemical, Mathematical, and Physical Universe: 3 credits required

  • Cultures and Societies of the World: 3 credits required

  • Historical Perspectives: 3 credits required

  • Living Systems: 3 credits required

  • Social and Economic Systems: 3 credits required

  • Science and Society: 3 credits required

  • Satisfies the Science and Society Requirement.

Prerequisites


Completion of 24 credit hours at the University of Virginia by the end of the Spring of a student’s first year.  This may include general education credits, credits toward another major or minor, and electives.

Foundation of Data Science


Must be taken at UVA and completed with a grade of C- or higher.  This may not be taken on a Credit/No Credit basis.

Program Requirements


CREDIT/GPA MINIMUMS


  • Number of DS Course Credits required: 49
  • Number of Credits required to be taken at UVA: 60
  • Minimum CUM GPA to graduate: 2.00
  • Total Credits required: 120 credits

Core Curriculum (40 credits)


Due to course sequencing and availability, students may not withdraw from a core course.  Students must take courses for a letter grade and achieve a grade of D or better.

Exceptions & Substitutions


Due to course sequencing, availability, and program learning outcomes, the School does not allow exceptions or substitutions within the core course requirements.

Data Science Electives (9 credits)


All students must complete at least 3 elective upper-level data science courses (9 credits). Students may opt to complete their electives via one of the optional School of Data Science Concentrations below. Each Concentration requires a minimum of three courses totaling 9 credits. Students who do not wish to complete a concentration may select any 3 courses from the School of Data Science Concentration course lists below.

Only three credits of either DS 4993 Independent Study or DS 4995 Directed Study can satisfy the required 9 credits of upper-level DS elective requirements in the B.S. in Data Science.

Collaborative Concentrations (may select 1 or more)


Students may select one or more collaborative concentration.  It is the student’s responsibility to ensure they have met any prerequisites for the collaborative concentration courses.

Educational Analytics Concentration


Educational Analytics, in partnership with the School of Education and Human Development

Students must complete 3 courses from the list below.

Neuroscience (NESC) Concentration


Students must complete at least 3 courses totaling 9 credits from the restricted list below:

Analytical Accounting Concentration


Students will complete each of the following courses: 

Environmental Science Concentration


Students must complete at least 3 courses totaling 10 credits for the Environmental Sciences Concentration from the following options:

Astronomy Concentration


To complete the Astronomy Concentration, students must complete Calculus I (Math 1310 or 1210 or AP credit) and PHYS 1420/1425 and the following three courses:

Human Movement and Physiology Concentration


Three courses are required to complete this concentration.

Mathematics Concentration


Students must complete either of the following courses:

Economics Concentration


All students are required to take Intermediate Microeconomics (ECON 3010) or Mathematical Microeconomics (ECON 3110), and achieve a C+ or better. Principles of Microeconomics (ECON 2010) is a prerequisite for these courses.

After taking 3010/3110, students can fulfill the remaining credit requirements by taking any two courses at the 3000- or 4000-level for which they satisfy the prerequisites.

Global Public Health Concentration


Course enrollment is by permission of the instructor; students should indicate their concentation declaration in their request.

Public Policy and Leadership Concentration


Complete at least three courses totaling nine credits.

Electives


Students are encouraged to explore courses of interest and majors and minors in other disciplines.
