Return to: School of Medicine: Degree Programs or Graduate School of Architecture: Degree Programs
Public Health Sciences in the School of Medicine offers a combination program (Program) with the Department of Urban and Environmental Planning in the School of Architecture, in which a student may earn both a Master of Public Health (MPH) and Master of Urban and Environmental Planning (MUEP) in three years instead of the four years that would be required if completed separately.

Administration of the Program
The program is administered by a Program Committee composed of the Directors of the Master of Public Health and Master of Urban and Environmental Planning programs, as designated by the respective deans. The responsibilities of the Program Committee extend to admission to the combination degree program, coordination of curricula for the students involved, resolution of problems that may arise, reconciliation of course and examination conflicts, and promotion and marketing of offerings by the two schools where that seems feasible. The Deans from each school will also appoint a faculty advisor to the program who may or may not also serve as the school representative to the Program Committee. Students who have been admitted independently to both schools and who wish to undertake the combination degree program should notify the registrar of both schools and apply to the Program Committee for permission to do so. Entrance to the MPH-MUEP program will not be guaranteed by virtue of acceptance at both schools, but will be judged according to criteria, which is the responsibility of the Program Committee. Students may not remain enrolled in both degree programs unless accepted into the Program. Curriculum
The program takes three years to complete. In brief, in years one and two, the student will complete the first year of a program consistent with the school of enrollment. In year three, the student will alternate schools of enrollment by term, beginning the fall term in the same school in which they enrolled year two, while completing coursework in both schools as needed to satisfy each degree program’s remaining curricular requirements. At the conclusion of the third year, students who have earned a minimum of 36 credits in the Department of Public Health Sciences and a minimum of 44 credits in the School of Architecture will be awarded both the MPH and MUEP. A maximum of two courses (six credit hours of electives) can be counted toward the total required degree program credit hours of both degree programs after consultation with the program committee. The student will be required to meet the grading standards of both schools independently to remain in good academic standing. Change of Status
At any point in the program, the student may terminate plans for a combination degree and continue toward a single degree at either school. The student must then satisfy the normal requirements of the school elected. Both schools agree to provide credit for the elective coursework student complete during their enrollment in the program. Students will need to satisfy the requirements for graduation stipulated by the degree program they elect to complete. Financial Aid
Financial aid will be provided by the school to which the student is paying tuition during each semester. Financial aid is not guaranteed and is subject to individual school and University availability and regulations. |
