Reading Education, M.Ed.

Program Requirements

The Master’s of Education in Reading Education program requires a minimum of 30 credits of coursework at the 5000-level or higher. Students must have passing scores on all licensure exams and meet all statutory requirements. Details about requirements for licensure can be found on the Reading Education website and are subject to change as state regulations are revised. All students must take the following courses:

Practicum Requirement: 3 credits

The practicum provides an experiential academic component to enhance the student’s knowledge and skillset in reading education. Students will have the choice of selecting a practicum site or being assigned a site by the program director. The practicum will entail supervised, practical application of knowledge and skills gained in coursework. Students will be required to fulfill a minimum of 45 clock hours. Students will be evaluated by a supervising faculty member in consultation with on-site administrators. Assessment of student performance will be based on participation in course assignments, weekly reports, structured observations of lesson implementation, and timesheets to verify contact hours. If a student fails the practicum, the course may be repeated in the next semester to fulfill the practicum requirement. A student who fails the practicum requirement a second time will be dismissed from the program.

Transfer Credits

A maximum of 6 credit hours can be transferred into the program after the course is evaluated by the advisor to meet a number of conditions (e.g., graduate-level, is equivalent in rigor and focus to a course offered in the program, the student earned a grade of B- or higher, and the course was successfully completed less than 5 years fromt he date of admission to the program).

Public Professional Licensure Disclosure

UVA participates in the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA), which establishes comparable national standards for interstate postsecondary distance education without additional regulatory authorization from member states.  SARA also provides limited authorization to place students in supervised field experiences. Except for California all U. S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S Virgin Islands participate in SARA. Although California does not participate in SARA, it allows students to enroll in out-of-state programs.  Additional information is available on the NC-SARA website.

Upon completion of the Graduate Certificate in Reading Education at the UVA School of Education and Human Development, graduates are eligible for an add-on endorsement in Virginia.

Please visit the University’s state authorization web pages to make an informed decision regarding which states’ educational requirements for initial licensure are met by this program. (668.43(a)(5) (v)(A) - (C))

Enrolled students who change their current (or mailing) address to a state other than Virginia should update this information immediately in the Student Information System as it may impact their ability to complete internship, practicum, or clinical hours, use Title IV funds, or meet licensure or certification requirements in the new state.
