Media Studies, Ph.D.

Core Courses: 21 credit hours

Students must complete each of the following courses. 

• MDST 8900 - Graduate Independent Study Credits: 3

Media History Requirement: 3 credit hours

Students must complete one course from the following list. 

• MDST 8001 - Histories of Media Technologies Credits: 3

Media Research Methods Requirements: 6 credit hours

Students will select two courses from the following list.

• MDST 7704 - Political Economy of Communication Credits: 3
• MDST 8003 - Methods of Media Research Credits: 3

Electives: 30 credits

Selected courses must be approved by the student’s research advisor. Students may request approval to complete electives from elsewhere in the university.

Research Requirement: minimum of 12 credit hours

All students will enroll in the non-topical (independent) research course repeatedly while completing independent research and writing (e.g., major research project, dissertation proposal, and dissertation). Students may enroll in the course below prior to advancing to candidacy.
