Post Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Course Series

Return to: School of Continuing and Professional Studies: Degree Programs

The University of Virginia Post Baccalaureate Pre-Medical course series offers a collaborative environment and structured experience for career-changers with a strong undergraduate record who have not completed the medical school prerequisites.

In 11 months, UVA Post Bacc Pre-Med students take required science courses while being guided by dedicated advisors in the preparation of medical school application materials. Students augment their clinical exposure through shadowing and volunteer opportunities at the UVA Health System and other regional sites, and attend regular class sessions taught by a physician focusing on the US healthcare system, professionalism, and bioethics. The course series also includes MCAT materials and guidelines for students to prepare for the medical school admissions test.

The Post Bacc Pre-Med course series is not designed to help students strengthen an otherwise weak academic record or to repeat pre-medical science course requirements. For more information visit online at www.scps.virginia.edu

Post Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Course Series - Curriculum

The curriculum engages students in the pre-requisite science education necessary to apply to medical school and helps prepare them to sit for the MCAT examination. The course series is completed in eleven months, beginning with the summer session, followed by courses in the fall and spring semesters. Opportunities for engaging in volunteer and shadowing experiences are also available to students.

The core Post Bacc Pre-Med curriculum includes a series of science courses and labs required for medical school application. Coursework includes biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and physics, along with associated labs. Additionally, Post Bacc Pre-Med students take a course on the U.S. Healthcare System, taught by the medical advisor. Please note that any change to a student’s course schedule requires approval from the PBPM Program Director.

Post Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Course Series - Admissions

College graduates from an accredited college or university who seek the requisite science courses for medical school admission may apply. Admission is highly selective and competitive. Exceptional academic grades and letters of recommendation, along with strong commitment to and motivation for medicine are characteristic of students. In addition, the admissions committee will give preference to applicants with work experience and/or relevant volunteer experience in a clinical setting. Qualified candidates will be invited to interview with the Admissions Committee and acceptance into the course series is done on a rolling basis.

Admission Requirements

In order to be considered for admission, applicants must complete and submit an online PostBacCAS application which includes the following:

  • At least one letter of recommendation (preferably a faculty reference highlighting the applicant’s academic abilities)

  • A current resume reflecting education as well as work and volunteer experiences
