Program Requirements

The Certificate in Reading Education program requires a minimum of 21 credits of coursework at the 5000-level or higher. All students must take the following courses:

Core Courses: 21 credits

EDIS 6710 - Reading and Writing Foundations for Diverse Learners Credits: 3
EDIS 6720 - Understanding the Code: The Language Systems of Written English Credits: 3
EDIS 6730 - Diagnosis & Remediation I: Word-Based Assessment & Intervention Credits: 3
EDIS 6740 - Diagnosis & Remediation II: Meaning-Based Assessment & Intervention Credits: 3
EDIS 6750 - Reading Development, Assessment, and Interventions with Special Populations Credits: 3
EDIS 6760 - Literacy Leadership and Coaching Credits: 3
EDIS 6770 - Practicum in Reading Intervention Credits: 3
Students must have passing scores on all licensure exams and meet all statutory requirements. Details about requirements for licensure can be found on the Reading Education website and are subject to change as state regulations are revised.

Transfer Credits

A maximum of 6 credit hours can be transferred in to the program after the course is evaluated by the advisor to meet a number of conditions (e.g., graduate-level, is equivalent in rigor and focus to a course offered in the program of study, the student earned a grade of B- or higher, and the course was successfully completed less than 5 years from the date of admission to the program).

Public Professional Licensure Disclosure

As a member of the State Authorizations Reciprocity Agreement, the University of Virginia (UVA) is authorized to provide curriculum in a distance learning environment to students located in all states in the United States except for California. (34 CFR 668.43(a)(6)& 34 CFR 668.72(n)).

Upon completion of the Certificate in Reading Education program at the UVA School of Education and Human Development, graduates may be eligible for initial professional licensure in another U.S. state by applying to the licensing board or agency in that state.
