The Portuguese language and Luso-Brazilian culture program functions primarily as a service to other fields, including Spanish, Latin American Studies, the Latin American program in the department of Government and Foreign Affairs, Anthropology, Media Studies, History, and others. Students interested in the minor are strongly encouraged to spend a summer or semester studying abroad in Brazil.

Requirements for Minor in Portuguese

The Portuguese minor consists of eighteen credits beyond the following two courses:

PORT 2120 - Intermediate Intensive Portuguese Credits: 4
PORT 2050 - Intensive Portuguese for Speakers of Spanish and other Romance Languages Credits: 4
Students must take eighteen credits from the following courses:
PORT 3010 - Advanced Grammar, Conversation and Composition Credits: 3
PORT 3559 - New Course in Portuguese Credits: 3
PORT 4559 - New Course in Portuguese Credits: 3
PORT 4020 - Readings in Literature in Portuguese Credits: 3
PORT 4410 - Brazilian Cultural Production I (1500 to 1900) Credits: 3
PORT 4420 - Brazilian Cultural Production II (1900 to Present) Credits: 3
PORT 4610 - Studies in Luso-Brazilian Language and Culture Credits: 3
PORT 4620 - Studies in Luso-Brazilian Language and Literature Credits: 3
PORT 4240 - Contemporary Brazilian Cinema
PORT 4260 - Brazilian Media
PORT 4270 - The Civilization of Brazil
