MASTER OF ENGINEERING PROGRAM: Civil Engineering
Overview
The Civil Engineering (CE) Master of Engineering (M.E.) is a coursework-based graduate professional degree that may be completed on-Grounds as a full-time student; online as a student in the Virginia Engineering Online (VEO) program.
The M.E. degree in the CE program is built of two components:
- Core courses, supplying the fundamentals of systems engineering.
- Elective courses, focusing on techniques of analysis and application of fundamentals to a problem area.
Admissions Criteria
Information about academic eligibility, the admissions process, and application deadlines is available on the UVA Engineering School’s Graduate Admissions webpage. All applications are submitted online.
Advising and Professional Development
Upon admission to the program, the student is assigned to the M.E. program faculty advisor. The student should meet with M.E. program advisor to plan their course selection and career objectives before the start of each semester.
Program Requirements
A candidate for the M.E. degree must fulfill the School of Engineering and Applied Science M.E. degree requirements (see “M.E., M.C.S., and M.M.S.E. Milestone Requirements” on the School of Engineering and Applied Science—Academic Rules page of the Record) and complete an approved plan of study. The plan of study must be prepared under the guidance of the faculty advisor by the end of the first semester of study and fifteen (15) of the graded coursework credits must be taken within CE. It then must be approved by the graduate program director. The approved plan of study may be revised if necessary but must be submitted for approval. M.E. students may use the five tracks provided by the Civil M.E. program, each corresponding to a subspecialty within CE, as guides to create their plan of study.
Special Circumstances
Students pursuing a B.S. in Engineering at UVA may begin taking courses within the CE M.E. program during their fourth year, with appropriate guidance from their academic advisor and approval from course instructors (as necessary). As 4000-level classes may not be used toward the M.E. degree, students are encouraged to take 5000- or 6000-level classes with instructor’s approval.
Students without a B.S. in Engineering may apply for admission to the CE M.E. program; however, they must complete certain prerequisite or corequisite courses. Each track has its own prerequisites, which are noted in the links above. If accepted, the student will work with their academic advisor to map out an appropriate sequence of courses toward the degree.
Additional information about the program and administrative forms can found on the Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering and the Virginia Engineering Online webpages.
Students should consult “Transfer Credit” and “Time Limit” in the School of Engineering and Applied Science—Academic Rules section of the Record for policies that govern transferring credits and limits on the time that may be taken to earn a degree.
