Master of Arts
Students are expected to complete a minimum of 30 credits of graded coursework, including SPAN 7220 (History of the Language).
Students are expected to present a Second-Year Portfolio.
Doctor of Philosophy
Of the 72 credits required for the doctoral degree, students are expected to complete a minimum of 42 credits of graded coursework, including SPAN 7220 (History of the Language) and SPAN 8210 (Teaching Foreign Languages). These 42 credits must include a course in media, two on theoretical approaches in the humanities or the social sciences, and at least two courses offered outside the department. The department maintains a list of approved courses for this purpose, and a single course may satisfy more than one of these requirements. In addition, students are expected to complete GHSS 6500 (Introduction to Graduate Studies); GHSS 7500 (Professional Life After Graduate School); SPAN 8900 (Comprehensive Exams); and SPAN 8901 (Dissertation Proposal).
Students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in two languages other than Spanish or mastery of one language other than Spanish.
Students are expected to submit a Statement of Research Interests by the conclusion of the second semester of study.
Students are expected to submit a Second-Year Portfolio by the conclusion of the fourth semester of study.
Students are expected to pass a comprehensive doctoral examination by the conclusion of the fifth semester of study.
Students are expected to write and defend a dissertation proposal by the conclusion of the sixth semester of study.
Students are expected to complete all requirements stated above by the conclusion of the sixth semester of study.
Students are expected to write and defend a dissertation.
