Degree Requirements


Master of Arts


Of the 30 credits required for the degree, students are expected to complete a minimum of 27 graded credits related to their regional concentration, including a minimum of three credits each in the areas of history, religion, politics and literature.  Coursework may be drawn from other departments, and all course enrollments are subject to approval by the Director of Graduate Studies.

Students are expected to complete MESA 8995 (MA Research Seminar) and submit a thesis.

Students in Middle East Studies are expected to demonstrate at least a third-year competency in their regional language. Students in South Asia Studies are expected to demonstrate at least a second-year competency in their regional language.
