Degree Requirements

Master of Arts

Concentration in Composition

Students are expected to complete a minimum of 36 credits of graded coursework, including four semesters of private composition instruction.

Students are expected to create two substantive works to be performed and evaluated by the faculty, one by the conclusion of the second semester and another by the conclusion of the fourth semester.

Students are expected to submit an article-length paper demonstrating analytical and critical abilities by midterm of the fourth semester.

Concentration in Critical and Comparative Studies

Students are expected to complete a minimum of 36 credits of graded coursework, including MUSI 7511 (Introduction to Music Research) during the first semester and up to nine credits outside the department.

Doctor of Philosophy

Concentration in Composition

Of the 72 credits required for the doctoral degree, students are expected to complete a minimum of 54 credits of graded coursework, including four semesters of private composition instruction and no more than two courses at the 5000 level.

Students are expected to file a plan for language acquisition at the end of the first semester.

Students are expected to create two substantive works to be performed and evaluated by the faculty, one by the conclusion of the second semester and another by the conclusion of the fourth semester.

Students are expected to submit an article-length paper demonstrating analytical and critical abilities by midterm of the fourth semester.

Students are expected to pass a Qualifying Examination during the sixth semester consisting of written exercises and an oral examination.

Students are expected to obtain approval by midterm of the seventh semester of a proposal that describes both the composition and the essay that together will constitute the dissertation project.

Students are expected to complete all requirements stated above by the midterm of their seventh semester of study.

Students must write and defend a dissertation.

By the end of the fifth semester, students are expected to pass a written Qualifying Examination

By the end of the sixth semester, students are expected to obtain approval of a detailed prospectus of the dissertation project.

Students are expected to complete all requirements stated above by the conclusion of their sixth semester of study.

Students are expected to write and defend a dissertation.
