Doctor of Philosophy
Of the 72 credits required for the doctoral degree, students are expected to complete a minimum of 39 credits of graded coursework, including ARAH 8051 (Theory and Interpretation).
Students are expected to complete a qualifying paper. Students who have completed a master’s degree before being admitted to the doctoral program may have this requirement waived.
Students are expected to demonstrate a reading knowledge of at least two foreign languages appropriate to the dissertation field as determined in consultation with the dissertation director and Director of Graduate Studies. Proficiency in the first language must be demonstrated during the first semester of study and no later than the end of the first year. Proficiency in the second language must be demonstrated before the completion of coursework. Proficiency is demonstrated by passing a translation test with the aid of a dictionary administered by one of the language departments at the University or by the graduate program.
Students are expected to pass written and oral qualifying examinations during their fourth semester of study.
Students are expected to obtain approval of a dissertation prospectus by the conclusion of their fifth semester of study.
Students are expected to complete all requirements stated above by the conclusion of their fifth term of study.
Students are expected to present their dissertation research topic to an audience of faculty and graduate students by the conclusion of their sixth term of study
Students are expected to write and defend a dissertation.
