Degree Requirements
Master of Arts
Of the 30 credits required for the degree, students are expected to complete a minimum of 24 credits of graded coursework, including HIST 7001 (Approaches to Historical Study) and HIST 8001 (Master’s Essay Writing).
Students in some areas of specialization are required to demonstrate foreign language mastery or proficiency.
Students are expected to complete a master’s essay and defend it in a public forum attended by the first and second readers.
Students are expected to complete all requirements listed above prior to the conclusion of the third semester of study.
Doctor of Philosophy
Of the 72 credits required for the doctoral degree, students are expected to complete a minimum of 36 credits of graded coursework, including HIST 7001 (Approaches to Historical Study) and HIST 8001 (Master’s Essay Writing).
Students are expected to complete a master’s essay and defend it in a public forum attended by the first and second readers.
Students in some areas of specialization are required to demonstrate foreign language mastery or proficiency.
Students are expected to pass the comprehensive qualifying examination, which consists of both written and oral components, demonstrate foreign language master or proficiency based on their area of specialization, and obtain approval of a dissertation prospectus.
Students are expected to complete all requirements listed above prior to the conclusion of the sixth semester of study.
Students are expected to write and defend a dissertation.
