Master of Arts
Of the 30 credits required for the degree, students are expected to complete a minimum of 24 credits of graded coursework, including a minimum of eighteen credits of coursework in Greek and Latin taken in the Department. Students are expected to pass a translation exam in Greek or Latin; a written exam in Greek or Roman history (or audit equivalent courses approved by the Director of Graduate Studies while achieving a minimum average grade of B on the midterm and final); and a translation exam in German, French, or Italian.
Doctor of Philosophy
Of the 72 credits required for the degree, students are expected to complete a minimum of 51 credits of graded coursework, including 36 credits of coursework in Greek and Latin taken in the Department and Classics 9995 (Dissertation Seminar).
Students are expected to pass a preliminary translation exam in either Greek or Latin; translation exams in German and either French or Italian; written examinations on Greek and Roman history (or audit equivalent courses approved by the Director of Graduate Studies while achieving a minimum average grade of B on the midterm and final); general examinations involving translation of Greek and Latin and commentary on an author; an oral examination on Greek and Latin literature; and obtain approval of a dissertation prospectus.
Students are expected to complete all requirements stated above by the conclusion of their seventh term of study.
Students are expected to write and defend a dissertation.
