Master of Arts

Students are expected to complete a minimum of 30 credits of graded coursework, including a minimum of nine credits on pre-1800 topics and a minimum of nine credits on post-1750 topics.

Students are expected to complete an oral examination during their final semester. All parts of the examination must be passed; any failed part of the comprehensive examination may be retaken only once, normally within four months.

Students are expected to complete the degree in a maximum of four semesters.

Doctor of Philosophy

Of the 72 credits required for the degree, students are expected to complete a minimum of 42 credits of graded coursework, including a minimum of 24 credits at the 7000-level or above, a minimum of nine credits on pre-1800 topics, a minimum of nine credits on post-1750 topics, and one course in theories and methods of foreign language teaching (FREN 7040: Theories and Methods of Foreign Language Teaching).

Students are expected to demonstrate reading knowledge in German, a romance language other than French, or another language approved by the faculty by passing a written proficiency examination aided by a dictionary.

Students are expected to pass a qualifying examination consisting of a comprehensive oral exam during their fourth semester and an oral defense of the dissertation proposal during their sixth semester. All parts of the examination must be passed; only one reexamination is permitted on any failed part.

Students are expected to complete all requirements stated above by the conclusion of their sixth semester.

Students are expected to submit and offer a public oral presentation of a draft of their first chapter by the conclusion of their seventh semester.

Students are expected to write and defend a dissertation.
