Master of Arts
Of the 30 credits required for the degree, students are expected to complete a minimum of 24 credits of graded coursework.
Students are expected to complete a master’s thesis.
Doctor of Philosophy
Of the 72 credits required for the doctoral degree, students are expected to complete a minimum of 36 credits of graded coursework, including HIST 7001 (Approaches to Historical Study), HIST 8001 (Master’s Essay Writing) or and approved equivalent, and two iterations of Supervised Reading and Tutorial.
Students are expected to complete a master’s thesis, pass written exams and an oral examination, demonstrate foreign language mastery or proficiency based on their area of specialization, and obtain approval of a dissertation prospectus.
Students are expected to complete all requirements stated above prior to the beginning of the third year of study. Students in the fields of Ancient Europe and Medieval Europe are eligible for a two-term extension to complete all pre-dissertation requirements.
Students are expected to write and defend a dissertation.
