Degree Requirements


Master of Arts


Of the 30 credits required for the degree, students are expected to complete a minimum of 24 credits of graded coursework, including a minimum of eighteen credits of coursework in Greek and Latin taken in the Department. Students are expected to pass a translation exam in Greek or Latin; a written exam in Greek or Roman history (or audit equivalent courses approved by the Director of Graduate Studies while achieving a minimum average grade of B on the midterm and final); and a translation exam in German, French, or Italian.

Doctor of Philosophy


Of the 72 credits required for the degree, students are expected to complete a minimum of 54 credits of graded coursework, including 39 credits of coursework in Greek and Latin taken in the Department.

Students are expected to pass a preliminary translation exam in either Greek or Latin; translation exams in German and either French or Italian; written examinations on Greek and Roman history (or audit equivalent courses approved by the Director of Graduate Studies while achieving a minimum average grade of B on the midterm and final); general examinations involving translation of Greek and Latin and commentary on an author; and an oral examination on Greek and Latin literature.

Students are expected to complete all requirements stated above  by the conclusion of their seventh term of study.

Students are expected to write and defend a dissertation.
