Admission Prerequisites

Prior to enrolling in the McIntire School, a student must complete the following courses:

Commerce

COMM 1800 - Making Business Work Credits: 3 Suggested Year: 1^st

Students transferring from other colleges and Universities should consult with the McIntire Office of Undergraduate Admission regarding appropriate transfer courses, generally an Introduction to Business course or similar course.

COMM 2010 - Introduction to Financial Accounting Credits: 3 Suggested Year: 2nd
COMM 2020 - Introduction to Management Accounting Credits: 3 Suggested Year: 2nd

Non-Commerce

ECON 2010 - Principles of Economics: Microeconomics Credits: 3 Suggested Year: 1^st or 2^nd
ECON 2020 - Principles of Economics: Macroeconomics Credits: 3 Suggested Year: 1^st or 2^nd
MATH 1210 - Applied Calculus I Credits: 3 Suggested Year: 1^st
Or Higher Calculus Class
STAT 2120 - Introduction to Statistical Analysis Credits: 4 Suggested Year: 1^st
AP credit for STAT 1120 also accepted
Humanities/Fine Arts Credits: 3-6 Suggested Year: 1^st or 2^nd
Foreign Language Credits: 0-14 Suggested Year: 1^st or 2^nd
ENWR 1510 - Writing and Critical Inquiry Credits: 3 Suggested Year: 1^st
Other English courses that will satisfy the Writing Requirement are ENWR 1505 and ENWR 1506 ; ENWR 1507 and ENWR 1508 ; ENWR 2520

Note: English Composition, Humanities and Foreign Language requirements as defined in the Record, College of Arts and Sciences chapter, area requirements section. Three humanities credits are required prior to enrollment. Three additional humanities credits (which may include additional ENWR) will be required before graduation and may be taken either before or after entering the McIntire School.

Students planning to concentrate in Finance are encouraged to complete additional elective coursework in mathematics particularly if they received AP or transfer credit for the Math requirements.

Third-Year Core Curriculum

During the third year a student must complete the following core curriculum in sequence during the fall and spring semesters:

Fall Semester

COMM 3010 - Strategy and Systems Credits: 4
COMM 3020 - Behavioral Issues in Marketing and Management Credits: 4
COMM 3030 - Quantitative and Financial Analysis Credits: 4

Spring Semester

COMM 3040 - Strategic Value Creation Credits: 4.5
COMM 3050 - Managerial Decision Making Credits: 4.5
COMM 3410 - Commercial Law I Credits: 3
COMM 3410 may be taken prior to enrollment in the McIntire School or in the fourth year, and if taken at the University of Virginia will be included in the student’s 39 Commerce credits.

Commerce Electives

Students are required to earn 3-6 credits in Commerce electives from among 3000- and 4000- level courses after enrollment in The McIntire School of Commerce.

Non-Commerce Electives

After enrollment, students may take any courses necessary to complete the 57-credit requirement.

Credit Requirements

Students must earn 120 credits for the Bachelor of Science in Commerce. Of these:

48 credits must be in Commerce courses
57 credits must be in non-Commerce courses (including ECON 2010 and ECON 2020);
15 credits may be in either Commerce or non-Commerce courses.

Students must earn the following minimum credits after enrollment at McIntire:

57 total credits;
39 credits in Commerce, including:
1. 24 credits of core courses;
2. 9-12 credits of courses in a concentration;
3. 3-6 elective credits

Grade Requirements

Students must achieve at least a 2.000 grade point average for:

All course work completed;
All course work within the concentration;
All Commerce courses;
Course work taken during the semester immediately preceding graduation. This semester must be completed in good academic standing (see Probation).
