Degree Requirements


Master of Arts


Students are expected to complete a minimum of 30 credits of graded coursework, including a minimum of 12 credits at or above the 7000 level, SPAN 7220 (History of the Language) and SPAN 8210 (Teaching Foreign Languages). 

Students are expected to pass a comprehensive written and oral examination.

Doctor of Philosophy


Of the 72 credits required for the doctoral degree, students are expected to complete a minimum of 54 credits of graded coursework, including 36 credits at or above the 7000 level; SPAN 7220 (History of the Language); SPAN 8210 (Teaching Foreign Languages); SPAN 7100 (Literary Theory) or FREN 7500 (Topics in Theory and Criticism), ENCR 8610 (Introduction to Modern Literary Theory and Criticism), or CPLT 8002 (Comparative and Translational Studies); and a minimum of two courses at or above the 8000 level.

Students are expected to demonstrate proficiency of two other foreign languages or mastery of one other foreign language.

Students are expected to pass a written and oral comprehensive preliminary examination.

Students are expected to pass a written and oral comprehensive doctoral examination, which includes a master class presentation, and to obtain approval of a dissertation proposal.

Students are expected to complete all requirements stated above by the conclusion of their eighth semester.

Students are expected to write and defend a dissertation.
