Prerequisites for Declaring the Major

  • Students must have completed at least two psychology classes with grades of C or better and have a minimum 2.000 GPA for all psychology courses taken. One class must be PSYC 1010 and the other a 2000-level class. The 2000-level psychology class credits also count toward the major credit requirements. Transfer or AP credit may count for one or both classes.
  • Students cannot declare a psychology major after having completed their sixth semester unless they have already taken PSYC 3005 or PSYC 4005. A student does not have to have the required C grade in PSYC 3005 or PSYC 4005 to satisfy the declaration requirement.
  • A prerequisite for PSYC 3005 and PSYC 4005 is students must have completed one of the following math courses with a grade of C- or higher: MATH 1210 (Applied Calculus I), MATH 1212 (Applied Calculus I with Algebra), MATH 1220 (Applied Calculus II), MATH 1310 (Calculus I), MATH 1320 (Calculus II), APMA 1090 (Single Variable Calculus I), or APMA 1110 (Single Variable Calculus II). Students with transfer credit or AP credit in one of these courses (e.g., AP Calculus AB, or AP Calculus BC) are exempt from the requirement. Students need not have completed the math requirement to declare a psychology major but must have completed the math requirement before taking PSYC 3005.

Requirements for Major

  • Students are required to take at least 30 credits in psychology at the 2000-level or higher.
  • To ensure breadth, the major program must also include at least one 2000-level course from each of the following three groups: (1) PSYC 2100, 2150 and 2300; (2) PSYC 2200 and 2220; and (3) PSYC 2400, 2600 and 2700.
  • Students must complete the one-year sequence of research methods and data analysis, PSYC 3005 or PSYC 4005, and PSYC 3006.
  • Students must complete at least six credits of advanced course work in courses with numbers higher than 3006. At least three of these six credits must be at the 4000- or 5000-level. (PSYC 4005, Research in Psychology, Directed Readings in Psychology, and Internship do not count towards the six credits of advanced course work).
  • A grade of C or better is required in all Psychology classes that count toward the major.
  • A 2.000 GPA in all Psychology classes is required to complete the major.
  • Students receiving grades of “C minus” or lower in three psychology courses and have less than a 2.0 GPA in all psychology classes will not be permitted to continue in the major or minor.

Prerequisites for Declaring the Minor

The requirements to declare a minor and the prerequisite for taking PSYC 3005 are the same as those to declare a major.

Requirements for Minor

  • Students are required to take at least 16 credits in psychology at the 2000-level or higher. To ensure breadth, the major program must also include at least one 2000-level course from each of the following three groups: (1) PSYC 2100, 2150 and 2300; (2) PSYC 2200 and 2220; and (3) PSYC 2400, 2700 and 2600.
  • Students must complete the one-year sequence of research methods and data analysis, PSYC 3005 or PSYC 4005, and PSYC 3006.
  • Students must also complete at least three credits at the 4000- or 5000-level. (PSYC 4005, Research in Psychology, Directed Readings in Psychology, and Internship do not count towards the advanced course work).
  • A grade of C or better is required in all Psychology classes that count toward the minor.
  • A 2.000 GPA in all Psychology classes is required to complete the minor.
  • Students receiving grades of “C minus” or lower in three psychology courses and have less than a 2.0 GPA in all psychology classes will not be permitted to continue in the major or minor.
