Addresses three broad issues: how colonial encounters shaped anthropology; how they continue to influence the discipline; and how an awareness of them should recast current fieldwork and theory. Draws on and critiques the burgeoning literature in post-colonial theory as it concerns the agenda of anthropology. (E)
