ANTH 525 - The Experience of Illness in American Society Starting with the basic premise that the experience of illness/disease is at once a biological and cultural condition, the course focuses on narratives of the sick as a lens into the interrelationships between the body and society, medicine and culture. Begins with the individual experience of illness and self in one Western society and builds a theoretical framework with which we can begin to conceptualize cultural institutional responses to and definitions of disease and ill-health.
