WGS 2200 - Multiculturalism and Women’s Rights: A Global Perspective What happens when cultural practices seem to deny women basic individual rights? Do women have to choose between their culture and their rights? What is the role of the state in such dilemmas? Is deliberative democracy a solution? This course examines the theoretical literature on these issues as well as specific cases in several countries, including polygamy, veiling, FGM, and tribal and religious laws in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
