ANTH 386 - Archeology of Colonized Landscapes In this course, we examine how places—landscapes—both shape and are shaped by the colonial encounters that occur in them. Using archaeological case studies from the English and Spanish colonies in the Americas, the Roman Empire, and other colonial situations we consider how both the “colonizers” and the “colonized” attempt to assert themselves through the forms of the landscapes they create. Additionally, we investigate how landscapes themselves can influence the types of interactions that occur between people from colonial and indigenous groups. The class includes field trips to important Native American and English colonial period sites in Virginia. (SS)
