ANTH 374 - Turkey: Orientalism, Nationalism, and Modernity

This class challenges the imagined categories of “East” and “West” by exploring various themes in Turkish life from the end of the Ottoman Empire to the present. The class begins in the late Ottoman period, follows the dramatic changes that took place in Turkish life as a result of the reforms introduced by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and closes by focusing on the way these changes shape the experience of Turkish modernity. Using novels, films and scholarly texts, we will consider the impact of Orientalism, the contemporary urban-rural divide, issues of class and gender, and Turkey’s current effort to join the European Union.
