Batten Undergraduate Council (BUC)
The Batten Undergraduate Council represents the needs and interests of Batten School students. It helps to enrich their academic experience by encouraging community outreach, student leadership, special events, and professional development activities. The Council also provides opportunities for interaction among students, faculty, and alumni to foster a strong culture and close-knit Batten community.
Batten Undergraduate Mentorship Program (BUMP)
BUMP provides an environment that fosters learning outside the classroom, sensitivity to the community, and friendship ties that last beyond students’ time at UVA. Any Batten undergraduate student may join BUMP immediately upon admittance into the Batten School. Each underclass student is partnered with an upper-class student and the two get to know each other over the spring semester and summer before orientation for incoming students. BUMP holds monthly meetings, Round-Table Discussions twice a month, as well as other activities and events. Round-Table Discussions are opportunities for a set of partners to work with other BUMP members on a specific policy issue in the news.
Courageous Conversations in Policy (CCP)
CCP serves as a space for students of all backgrounds to have solution-driven conversations about policy issues relating to inequality, race, and social justice. The organization fosters open, honest, and intentional policy conversations are essential and should be accessible to students of all races, beliefs, and backgrounds. CCP is a place where students can start to move past discussing the problems and begin to formulate policy alternatives, or solutions, to these issues. If students from various backgrounds feel compelled to discuss an issue, CCP provides a space outside of the traditional classroom setting for them to do so.
Omicron Circle, Omicron Delta Kappa (O∆K)
Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society, recognizes and encourages superior leadership and exemplary character. O∆K encourages collaboration among members across the five phases celebrated by O∆K: scholarship, athletics, service, communications, and arts. Founded in 1914 at Washington and Lee University, O∆K honors and develops leaders through scholarships, workshops, career opportunities, leadership resources, and a lifelong connection to other members. UVA’s Omicron Circle was established on May 28, 1925.
Pi Alpha Alpha
Pi Alpha Alpha is the global honor society for public policy, public affairs, and public administration. There are more than 160 chapters located around the world at NASPAA member schools. Nomination to Pi Alpha Alpha is limited to students who have achieved academic excellence within the Frank Batten School of Leadership & Public Policy. Students who accept the nomination commit to continued academic leadership within the school and wider community.
Women in Policy (WiP)
WiP serves as a casual forum for students to discuss women and gender policy issues. Through compelling conversations, WiP aims to motivate members to actively engage with these policy concerns at WiP meetings, at UVA, and in the world. All discussions are informal and gender-inclusive, meaning we welcome all viewpoints and perspectives to expand our understanding of these complex issues. WiP firmly believes that both genders’ experiences and outlooks are essential to a dynamic dialogue of gender challenges in policy. This is not just a club for women and we encourage all interested men to join the conversation.
