Cyber-Physical Systems Certificate

The Cyber-Physical Systems certificate is designed to provide graduate students with specific knowledge and skills regarding the design, application, and ethical dimensions of cyber- physical systems (CPS). Cyber-physical systems integrate computation and communication with physical processes. The technical principles that underlie a CPS education span both the physical (physics, digital signal processing, embedded hardware such as sensors and actuators, control and hybrid systems, wireless communication and dynamic systems modeling) and the cyber (networking, embedded systems programming, machine learning, model-based design and formal methods, privacy and security, real-time systems and software engineering). Students will acquire technical depth and integrative transdisciplinary CPS knowledge in such core application areas as smart cities, smart health, autonomous systems and hardware for the Internet of Things. Students will learn how multiple layers of cyber-physical systems relate to each other, how they are applied and how they interact. Graduates will be able to integrate cyber and physical design elements and improve system performance and security.


Admissions


All students must apply to the certificate program. The following admissions requirements will apply to all applicants:

  • Admission to graduate or doctoral degree program in the School of Engineering and Applied Science; and
  • Application form.

Curriculum Requirements


The curriculum will provide a foundation in the technical principles and skill sets required in the field of cyber-physical systems (CPS). Coursework will provide specific background and education in key facets of CPS, enabling students to develop a deep understanding of the interfaces between the cyber and physical worlds. Students will learn to research, analyze, and integrate the multiple layers of cyber-physical systems. The curriculum also focuses on key policy and security issues in CPS, and the ethics of system design and implementation.
