General Information

The University of Virginia School of Medicine does not routinely consider nor admit Masters applicants.  Eligibility for the M.S. typically results from application to the Biomedical Sciences (BIMS) Ph.D. graduate or M.D. admissions* groups of the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Students must fulfill the following requirement for the M.S. in Biological and Physical Sciences.

Requirements for Master of Science

Students are expected to complete a minimum of 30 credits with 15 credits of graded coursework including:

Core courses (15 credits)

BIMS 6000 - Core Course in Integrative Biosciences (Credits: 10) or the equivalent.

BIMS 7100  (Credits 1) or equivalent

Colloquium (3 terms min)

All candidates are expected to participate in a colloquium, seminar, journal club series, Foundations of Clinical Medicine or the equivalent for a minimum of 3 semesters. Seminar/colloquia series should be selected based on the student’s needs and interests.

The completion of the pre-clinical MD curriculum* can be evaluated and transferred in place of BIMS 6000, BIMS 7100 and up to an additional 4 credits of coursework towards this degree program based on the SoMs policy on course equivalencies and the SoM Biomedical Sciences Transfer policy.
