Master of Arts
Of the 30 credits required for the degree, students are expected to complete a minimum of 24 credits of graded coursework.
Students are expected to complete a master’s essay.
Doctor of Philosophy
Of the 72 credits required for the doctoral degree, students are expected to complete a minimum of 36 credits of graded coursework, including HIST 7001 (Approaches to Historical Study) and HIST 8001 (Master’s Essay Writing) or an approved equivalent of HIST 8001.
Students are expected to complete a master’s essay, pass written exams and an oral examination, demonstrate foreign language mastery or proficiency based on their area of specialization, and obtain approval of a dissertation prospectus.
Students are expected to complete all requirements stated above prior to conclusion of the fifth semester of study, with the exception of students in the fields of Ancient Europe and Medieval Europe, who are expected to complete all requirements stated above prior to the end of the sixth semester of study.
Students are expected to write and defend a dissertation.
