Degree Requirements


Master of Arts


Of the 30 credits required for the degree, students are expected to complete a minimum of 24 credits of graded coursework, including one course on either Middle High German or Medieval and Early Modern German.

Students are expected to pass written and oral examinations and submit a thesis.

Doctor of Philosophy


Of the 72 credits required for the degree, students are expected to complete a minimum of 48 credits of graded coursework and a seminar on language pedagogy.  With approval from the Director of Graduate Studies, students may enroll in up to two courses outside of the department.  With approval of the faculty, students may take additional courses outside the department.

Students are expected to pass master’s level written and oral examinations during their third semester and submit a master’s thesis by the conclusion of their fourth semester.  Following the examinations, the faculty evaluates the student’s overall academic and teaching performance and, where appropriate, grants the student permission to proceed.

Students are expected to complete GERM 5100 by the conclusion of the third semester of study or demonstrate proficiency in Middle High German by some other method approved by the faculty.

Students are expected to demonstrate reading knowledge of French or another language approved by the faculty either by passing a literature course in the respective department with a grade of B or better, by passing a written examination administered by the relevant department, or by an equivalent means approved by the faculty.

Students are expected to pass a written and oral Ph.D. examination. In the case of a failure, the student may petition the faculty to retake the examination.

Students are expected to complete all requirements stated above by the conclusion of their sixth semester.

Students are expected to write and defend a dissertation.
