Students who meet requirements set by the Virginia Department of Education and the Curry School of Education may be admitted to certificate programs in Administration and Supervision, Reading Education or Gifted Education.  To be eligible for initial licensure, enrollees must complete all requirements outlined on program-area websites.

The certificate in Administration and Supervision is a state-approved program for individuals seeking endorsement in preK-12 school administration and supervision. The program is intended for individuals who have earned a master’s degree and are seeking state endorsement and a position as principal, assistant principal or central office supervisor. It requires 30 credits of coursework and an internship. See the Curry website for additional information.

The Reading Specialist certificate requires 30 credits of graduate coursework as prescribed by the state for the K-12 reading specialist endorsement. Teachers who hold an M.Ed. or an M.T. degree may add Virginia’s K-12 reading specialist endorsement to their teaching license when they have also completed three years of teaching during which teaching of reading was a primary responsiblity. See the Curry website for additional information.

The department also offers a fifteen-credit certificate study option in Adolescent Literacy. This certificate may be earned in concert with master’s degree work in reading or added on after completion of the MEd degree.
