Students interested in mathematics education may pursue a master’s or doctoral degree.  Those interested in M.Ed or M.T. programs must hold a baccalaureate degree with an emphasis in mathematics from an accredited college or university as well as meet other requirements for admission to the degree program. Students enrolled in the M.T. program are eligible for iniitial licensure after completing coursework, practica and state-mandated assessments successfully.  An applicant to Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree programs must hold a master’s degree and be prepared to complete required course work in 1) mathematics education, 2) relevant disciplinary areas of mathematics, 3) research methodology, and 4) seminars offered by mathematics faculty.

The M.Ed. degree program offers in-depth preparation for secondary or middle school teachers of mathematics. This degree option offers opportunities for individuals to develop greater understanding of educational research and policy in mathematics education.

The Ph.D. degree program with a mathematics education concentration prepares educators to pursue research agendas related to mathematics education either in university settings or at research-and-development centers, agencies, or organizations. Ph.D. candidates are also prepared to become mathematics teacher educators at a university or college level. Prospective students in the Ph.D. program must have a master’s degree in mathematics or mathematics education and at least two years of teaching experience.
