Degree Requirements


Master of Arts


Thirty credits of graduate courses (numbered 5000 or above), no more than six of which may be Non-Topical Research, at least eighteen credits must be courses in Greek and Latin taken in the Department; translation exam in Greek or Latin; written exam in Greek or Roman history; translation exam in one modern foreign language: German, French, or Italian; master’s paper.

Master of Teaching


Program in Latin offered through the Curry School of Education.

Doctor of Philosophy


Thirty credits of graduate courses in addition to those required for the Master of Arts, at least 21 of which must be courses in Greek and Latin taken in the Department; reading knowledge of a second modern foreign language (French, German, or Italian) in addition to that required for the Master of Arts; written examinations on Greek or Roman history (whichever has not been passed previously); general examinations: translation exams in Greek and in Latin, as well as a commentary exam on a set author, and an oral exam on Greek and Latin literature; dissertation; and oral defense. Students are expected to complete all pre-dissertation requirements, including coursework, language proficiency examinations, and qualifying examinations, by the conclusion of their eighth term of study.
