UVA Post Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Program

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: School of Continuing and Professional Studies

The UVA Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Program is designed for individuals with exceptional academic records who have not fulfilled their pre-medical prerequisites as an undergraduate and seek the science coursework which will enable them to apply to medical school and pursue a career in medicine. This full-time, twelve month program’s focus is the education and immersion of students in the pre-medical science curriculum, the medical field, and related opportunities. Volunteer and shadowing medical experiences will acquaint students with the medical field in preparation for medical school admission. The Program includes an intensive MCAT prep course, and faculty and staff provide individual guidance throughout the medical school application process. The Postbac Premed Program is not designed to help students strengthen an otherwise weak academic record or to repeat premedical science course requirements. For more information please visit the program online at www.scps.virginia.edu/postbac/

Post Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Program - Curriculum

The program curriculum engages students in the prerequisite science education necessary to apply to medical school as well as to prepare students to sit for the MCAT examination. The program is completed in one year of study, beginning with the summer sessions, followed by courses in the fall and spring semesters. In addition, topical seminars for students to further explore significant medical topics are scheduled throughout the year as well as MCAT preparatory. Opportunities for mentoring, interning, and engaging in volunteer experiences are also built into the program. Pre-med student study groups are available to reinforce classroom and laboratory education.

The core Post-Bac Pre-Med curriculum includes an established series of science courses and labs that are required for application to medical school. This includes a sequence of biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, and physics courses, along with associated labs.
