General Information

The field of bioethics is richly represented in the University’s various schools and academic programs. Nationally recognized scholars in bioethics and/or health law and policy teach in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Law.  The undergraduate program in bioethics (www. bioethics.virginia.edu) is widely considered a model of its kind, recognized for its breadth, depth, rigor, and popularity.

Although a free-standing MA in Bioethics is not offered, graduate students may take advantage of the numerous graduate-level couses offered each year to form a concentration in bioethics within certain departments and schools: GSAS PhD/MA programs in the Departments of Religious Studies and Philosophy; the School of Nursing’s PhD program; the School of Law’s JD/MA program, in conjunction with the Department of Philosophy; and the MPH program, which offers a track in Health Law and Ethics.
