Schedule Number: Five digit number that appears before the course times and dates.

Time and Place of Classes: Unless otherwise stated, classes meet once a day, five days a week at the hours listed after the course title. Classroom assignments are posted and updated in the online Course Offering Directory at www.virginia.edu/cod.

Course Designations: Courses numbered 100-499 are designed for undergraduates. Those numbered 500-599 are intended for graduate students but are open to approved undergraduates with advanced standing. Numbers 600-899 indicate courses for graduate and professional school students. Numbers above 900 indicate seminar and research courses.

Mountain Lake Biological Station

The University of Virginia operates Mountain Lake Biological Station west of Blacksburg in Giles County, Virginia, as an integral part of the Summer Session. The laboratory is at 3,800 feet elevation on the crest of Salt Pond Mountain near a natural lake and adjacent to the Mountain Lake Wilderness Area of Jefferson National Forest.

Curriculum A minimum of one year college biology is required as a prerequisite for all courses taught at Mountain Lake. Most courses are designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students. A maximum of four credits may be taken in each term.

Research Facilities are available at the station for research on many aspects of field biology. Those interested in independent research should consult with the Director or Associate Director.

Other Activities A regular seminar series is held during the summer session on topics of general interest to field biologists.

A full introduction to economic principles warrants completion of both ECON 201 and ECON 202. Students planning to take both are advised to take ECON 201 first, though this is not required. The department recommends ECON 201 to students intending to take only one semester of principles.

The Blandy Experimental Farm

The University of Virginia’s Blandy Experimental Farm is a 700-acre field station located in the northeastern Shenandoah Valley (61 miles west of Washington, D.C. on U.S. 50, 4 miles west of Shenandoah river; or 9.5 miles east of Winchester, VA, 1 mile east of Route 340/50 intersection). Blandy Experimental Farm is also home to the Orland E. White Arboretum, the State Arboretum of Virginia. The plant collections feature over 1,000 different varieties and species representing 100 genera and 50 families. There are a wide variety of programs and activities that fall within Blandy’s mission, including many public events. The arboretum is open to the public every day from dawn to dusk.
