Program/Course: Music

Overview The Department of Music serves students interested in many kinds of music.  A renowned faculty offers academic and performance instruction, from introductory courses requiring no previous musical study, to advanced work for ambitious majors. Areas of study include include classical music, jazz, popular and folk music, African and other world musics, music composition, and music technology.  Private lessons are offered in all the major instruments and voice, and the department’s many student and faculty performing ensembles include the Charlottesville Symphony, University Singers, Chamber Singers, Cavalier Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, African Music and Dance Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Free Bridge Jazz Quintet, Klezmer Ensemble, Baroque Orchestra, and many more.

The spectacular new Hunter Smith Band Building, located in the University’s Arts Grounds, is home to the Cavalier Marching Band and band program. Historic Old Cabell Hall, located on the central Lawn, houses the department’s main performance venue, the acoustically resplendent 900-seat Old Cabell Auditorium, as well as practice rooms, classrooms, and rehearsal spaces. Also located in Old Cabell are the Music Library, which owns the largest music collection in Virginia, and the Virginia Center for Computer Music, a cutting-edge technology lab for music composition and multimedia.

Faculty The department’s fifty faculty are nationally and internationally known for their work in musical scholarship, composition, and performance. Their expertise ranges across music history, ethnomusicology, music theory, acoustic and electronic composition, music technology, conducting, and instrumental and vocal performance. They have received many prestigious grants and awards, performed with world-renowned artists and ensembles, and produced a wide range of successful compositions, recordings, books, and articles. They include some of the most popular undergraduate teachers on grounds, and the department enrolls over 1000 students each semester in its classes, ensembles, and lessons.

Students We have approximately one hundred music majors. Some intend to continue professionally in music, while others combine their musical interests with studies in other areas such as pre-med, pre-law, or the humanities. Many students combine a major in music with a major or minor in another department. Music majors have close contact with faculty. Classes for the major range from ten to thirty-five students, and faculty and students meet regularly in many settings. The Music Department also offers a Distinguished Major Program for high-achieving majors who wish to pursue an extended project during their final year (see below for further information).
