Overview

The Department of Pathology offers a Ph.D. in Experimental Pathology through its program entitled, “Molecular and Cellular Basis of Disease (MCBD) Graduate Program.” Our students experience a unique interface between clinical, medical, and basic science realms, designed to elucidate the mechanisms of disease processes and cultivate the skills necessary to perform basic science and translational research.

Faculty

The MCBD training faculty are drawn from numerous basic science and clinical departments/divisions throughout the School of Medicine along with the Department of Biology. The unifying feature of our faculty is a commitment to research that seeks to understand the underlying forces driving disease processes. The MCBD faculty approach specific research questions from an array of different angles, ranging from basic bench science, translational studies using animal models and human specimens and human clinical trials. This variety in research interests and approaches provides the foundation for a rich and robust training environment for our MCBD students.

Students

Admission to the MCBD Program is normally through the Biomedical Sciences Program (BIMS) or the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP). Any student who will be pursuing disease-related research and who has an interest in the unique training opportunities and environment available through the MCBD program is encouraged to approach the program director to discuss training through the program. Determinations will be made on the basis of each student’s interests and will depend upon the approval of the mentor and the agreement of the MCBD program director.
